History

Eastern Counties Building Society was founded in 1855 as the Eastern Counties Permanent Benefit Building Society and was renamed in 1938. It expanded through acquisitions during the 1960s before merging with Leek & Westbourne Building Society in 1974 to form Leek, Westbourne & Eastern Counties Building Society. Reported acquisitions in 1966 vary between sources, including references to West Essex and Ipswich societies.
