UK Building Society Mergers & Acquisitions

This is an interactive reference mapping the history of mergers, acquisitions, and renamings among UK building societies — from small Victorian benefit societies through to the major mutuals of today.

Each node represents a building society. Follow the arrows to trace how hundreds of local societies were gradually absorbed into the institutions that exist today. Click any node to see its details, or use the group filters to focus on a particular family of societies.

Data is drawn primarily from the Building Societies Association's alphabetical list of changes since 1937, cross-referenced with the FCA Mutuals Public Register and the British Newspaper Archive. This is an ongoing personal research project — coverage will grow over time.

In Heritage view, node size and opacity reflect how many steps a society is from a current building society.
