History

Cumberland Building Society was established in 1850 as Cumberland Co-operative Benefit Building Society and was renamed in 1954. In 1996, it accepted a transfer of engagements from West Cumbria Building Society.

Headquartered in Carlisle, the society operates 31 branches across Cumbria and neighbouring areas. It is one of only two building societies in the United Kingdom to currently offer current accounts, alongside Nationwide Building Society, doing so since the 80s. It is also one of two current building societies, alongside Swansea Building Society, to apply a geographic restriction to certain new customers.

In 2014 it was the first building society to introduce mobile payments.
