West Cumbria building society was established around 1882 as Workington & West Cumberland Permanent Building Society, then briefly renamed to Workington & West Cumberland Building Society in 1972, before changing its name to West Cumbria the following year. In 1996 it transferred its engagements to Cumberland Building Society.
