The Co-operative Bank traces its origins to 1872, when it was established as the Loan & Deposit Department of the Co-operative Wholesale Society. It became the CWS Bank in 1876 and was registered as a separate plc in 1970 as The Co-operative Bank.
In 2009, the bank acquired Britannia Building Society. In 2025, Coventry Building Society completed its acquisition of The Co-operative Bank.
