History

Britannia Building Society was formed in 1975 following the renaming of Leek, Westbourne & Eastern Counties Building Society. It continued to expand through consolidation, acquiring a further 13 building societies during this period.

In 2005, the Bank of Ireland sold the savings and investment business of Bristol & West plc to Britannia Building Society, including its branch network. By 2008, Britannia had grown to become the second largest building society in the United Kingdom, operating 254 branches.

In 2009, Britannia Building Society merged with the Co-operative Banking Group.
