History

Leek & Moorlands Building Society was founded in 1856. It underwent significant expansion through mergers, including with Westbourne Park Building Society in 1965 to form Leek & Westbourne, and with Eastern Counties Building Society in 1974 to form Leek, Westbourne & Eastern Counties Building Society. In the same year, it accepted a transfer of engagements from Oldbury Britannia Building Society and was subsequently renamed Britannia Building Society in 1975.

The society continued to grow through an extensive programme of consolidation, completing more than 50 mergers and acquisitions, particularly during the 1960s through to the 1990s. Britannia Building Society was acquired by The Co-operative Bank in 2009, which was itself later acquired by Coventry Building Society in 2025.
