Stroud & Swindon Building Society was formed in 1986 through the merger of Stroud Building Society and Swindon Permanent Building Society. It expanded through transfers of engagements, including Frome Selwood Building Society in 1990 and City & Metropolitan Building Society in 1996.

In 2010, it merged with Coventry Building Society, with the combined organisation continuing under the Coventry Building Society name.
